# v0.20 liao2021 Tail-Gap AUC Bridge Form

Status: **OPERATOR LOCK 2026-06-03.** Reviewed for self-consistency and integrity: the
confirmatory framing + bounded claim are correct for a forking-paths-risky re-analysis;
`q10` is the locked primary (q05/q20 report-only); no measurement is licensed. Two gate
acknowledgments folded in at lock: H1b is **non-binding** (auto-satisfied by H1 given the
fixed `rho_median = 0.063`), and H2 is a **coherence sanity-check** largely implied by
v0.19's per-orbit H1 (its failure, not its pass, is the informative event); a report-only
leave-one-cell-out robustness sidecar was added. The chapter rests on H1. Runner
implemented after lock; no v0.20 statistic was computed at lock time. This is a
confirmatory aggregation chapter: it asks whether the direct cell-level bridge that v0.19
missed with a **median** gap succeeds when read as a pre-registered **tail** gap statistic.

## Frame

v0.19 landed `spectral_gap_mechanism_partial`:

```text
H1:  Spearman(re_gap, frame_spread) = -0.836, p = 1e-5  -> PASS
H2:  Spearman(cell median gap_reliability, AUC_cell) = 0.063, p = 0.402 -> miss
```

The synthesis is strong but not top-branch under the locked v0.19 tree:

```text
spectral gap -> frame fragility       (v0.19 H1, confirmed)
frame fragility tail -> AUC map       (v0.18, confirmed via frame_p90)
median spectral gap -> AUC map        (v0.19 H2, not confirmed)
```

v0.20 tests the obvious aggregation repair. If v0.18's AUC relationship is
tail-driven (`frame_p90`), then the spectral bridge should also use the **low-gap
tail**, not the cell median. This chapter asks whether a tail readout of
`re_gap` bridges directly to `AUC_cell`.

## Integrity Caveat

```text
post-hoc motivation disclosed:
  v0.20 exists because v0.19's median H2 missed and the result anatomy suggests
  the missed bridge lives in the fragile tail. This is a forking-paths risk.
same rows, same AUC:
  The primary uses the exact v0.18/v0.19 18 cells and AUC_cell values. It is NOT
  a fresh external confirmation, not a new held-out transfer test, and not an
  upgrade of the Tier-2 evidence base.
confirmatory, not promotional:
  A pass can say "the median H2 failed because the bridge is tail-aggregated."
  It cannot revise v0.19's locked verdict, promote to Tier-3, broaden the
  external-transfer claim, or claim a new vf->stability mechanism.
```

Forbidden:

```text
changing the v0.18 cells, AUC_cell values, frame_p90 values, or v0.19 per-row spectrum
trying multiple tail statistics and selecting the best as primary
using stability labels except through the already-locked v0.18 AUC_cell
lowering rho / p / improvement bars after reading the tail statistics
calling this a fresh validation or external evidence upgrade
claiming the coarse v0.11 zone form transfers
```

## Frozen Inputs

```text
v0.18 per-cell table:
  results/isotrophy/k-facet-v18-liao2021-reliability-auc/per_cell_auc.csv
  fields used: mass_cell, primary, AUC_cell, frame_p90
v0.19 per-row spectrum:
  results/isotrophy/k-facet-v19-spectral-gap-reliability/per_row_spectrum.csv
  fields used: mass_cell, status, re_gap, gap_reliability, frame_spread
required receipt gates:
  v0.18 verdict = reliability_drives_per_cell_auc_supported
  v0.19 verdict = spectral_gap_mechanism_partial
  v0.19 reproduce_v18_check.passes = true
  v0.19 H1_pass = true
  v0.19 H2_confirmatory_pass = false
  18 shared primary cells, 2880 successful rows
```

Any mismatch gives `blocked_by_receipt`.

## Primary Statistic

The primary cell-level spectral-tail reliability is:

```text
cell_gap_q10 = quantile(re_gap over successful rows in cell, q = 0.10)
tail_gap_reliability = log10(max(cell_gap_q10, 1e-9))
```

Direction:

```text
larger tail_gap_reliability = larger low-tail gap = less fragile tail = higher expected AUC
```

Rationale:

```text
v0.18 uses frame_p90, the high-spread tail. Because v0.19 H1 is negative
(small re_gap -> high frame_spread), the matching spectral statistic is the
low-gap tail. q10 is locked instead of min because each cell has 160 rows:
q10 is still a tail (about the 16th order statistic) but is less hostage to one
numerical outlier than min.
```

## Hypotheses

```text
H1 (PRIMARY, confirmatory bridge):
  statistic: Spearman(tail_gap_reliability, AUC_cell) over the 18 primary cells.
  direction: positive.
  bar: rho >= 0.45 AND one-sided permutation p <= 0.05
       (100000 cell-level shuffles, seed 20260523;
       p tail = shuffled rho >= observed rho).
H1b (aggregation-improvement guard -- DOCUMENTED INTENT, NON-BINDING):
  The tail bridge must materially outperform v0.19's median bridge.
  bar: rho_tail - rho_median >= 0.30, where rho_median is the locked v0.19
       H2 value 0.0629514963880289.
  NOTE: this gate is non-binding. rho_median is fixed at 0.063, so the bar reduces
  to rho_tail >= 0.363, which is implied by H1's rho_tail >= 0.45. H1b therefore
  passes automatically whenever H1 passes; it records the design intent (the median
  was so low that any H1-passing tail trivially beats it) but adds no independent
  constraint. Do not read an H1b pass as separate corroboration.
H2 (mechanism-coherence check -- EXPECTED TO PASS; FAILURE IS THE SIGNAL):
  statistic: Spearman(tail_gap_reliability, frame_reliability) over the same
  18 cells, where frame_reliability = -log10(frame_p90 + 1e-9).
  direction: positive.
  bar: rho >= 0.45 AND one-sided permutation p <= 0.05.
  NOTE: H2 is largely IMPLIED by v0.19's per-orbit H1 (small re_gap -> high
  frame_spread, rho -0.836). Aggregated to cell tails, a small-gap tail (low
  q10 re_gap) is a high-spread tail (high frame_p90), so tail_gap_reliability
  should track frame_reliability almost by construction. H2 is therefore a
  coherence guard, not independent corroboration: a PASS is expected; a FAILURE
  would flag that the cell-level tails do not align and the bridge is incoherent.
  Do not read an H2 pass as a second piece of evidence.
H3 (report-only sidecars):
  - min_gap_reliability = log10(max(min(re_gap), 1e-9))
  - near_gap_fraction = fraction(re_gap <= global q10(re_gap))
  - q05/q20 sensitivity panel (each cell's tail_gap_reliability at q=0.05 and
    q=0.20, with the H1 Spearman recomputed at each -- shows the primary q10 is
    not q-fragile)
  - leave-one-cell-out robustness: recompute the H1 Spearman over the 17 remaining
    cells for each dropped cell; report min / median / max LOO rho (shows H1 is not
    driven by a single influential cell, given n = 18)
  These cannot set or rescue the verdict.
```

## Verdict Tree

```text
blocked_by_receipt
  Required v0.18/v0.19 receipts unavailable or inconsistent.
tail_gap_bridge_supported_confirmatory
  H1 passes AND H1b passes AND H2 passes.
tail_gap_bridge_partial
  H1 passes but H1b or H2 misses; OR H2 passes but H1 misses.
tail_gap_bridge_not_supported
  H1 fails and H2 fails.
```

Interpretation is locked:

```text
supported_confirmatory:
  The v0.19 median bridge missed because the spectral mechanism is tail-aggregated.
  This confirms the direct gap-tail -> AUC bridge on the discovery cells, with the
  post-hoc caveat.
partial:
  Tail aggregation carries some of the expected structure, but the direct bridge is
  incomplete under the locked statistic.
not_supported:
  The transitive story remains: gap -> frame_fragility and frame_tail -> AUC. A direct
  cell-gap tail bridge is not supported under this registered readout.
```

## Required Outputs

```text
results/isotrophy/k-facet-v20-tail-gap-auc-bridge/
  manifest.json
  per_cell_tail_gap_bridge.csv
  tail_gap_auc_test.json
  tail_gap_frame_reliability_test.json
  sidecar_tail_sensitivity.csv
  operator_commands.md
```

`manifest.json` must include verdict, target SHA, v0.18/v0.19 receipt hashes or
paths, H1 rho/p, H1b delta vs median, H2 rho/p, N cells, the q used for the
primary tail (`0.10`), seed, permutation count, and the claim boundary.

## Claim Boundary

If `tail_gap_bridge_supported_confirmatory`:

```text
On the v0.18/v0.19 discovery cells, the direct spectral-gap -> AUC bridge appears
when the gap is read as a low-tail statistic rather than a median. This supports
the aggregation diagnosis of v0.19: the reliability mechanism is spectral, and
the relevant region-level summary is tail fragility.
```

Bounded:

```text
confirmatory re-analysis only
same 18 cells and same AUC as v0.18/v0.19
Tier-2 / Li-Liao lineage / stable-support / within-cell / tail-resolved score
not fresh external evidence
not full-catalog prevalence
not Tier-3
not theorem-facing
not an altitude-1 explanation of why vf -> stability
```

## Runner Scope

The runner is cheap bookkeeping over existing CSV receipts; no D5 integration,
no monodromy computation, and no new sampling are licensed by this form. It should
only:

```text
1. Verify v0.18/v0.19 receipt gates.
2. Load v0.19 per_row_spectrum.csv and v0.18 per_cell_auc.csv.
3. Compute the locked q10 tail statistic and report-only sidecars.
4. Run H1/H2 Spearman + one-sided cell-shuffle p-values.
5. Emit the verdict and receipts.
```

## Lock-In Statement

Committed as a draft before any v0.20 runner exists and before any v0.20 tail
statistic is computed. Any change to the primary tail statistic, q value, bars,
verdict tree, or claim boundary after execution is a re-registration.

## Result (landed 2026-06-03)

Verdict: **`tail_gap_bridge_supported_confirmatory`** (H1 PASS, H1b PASS, H2 PASS).

```text
receipts:    10/10 gate checks pass + analysis_18_cells -> receipts_ok = true
N cells:     18 primary (shared v0.18/v0.19), 160 successful orbits each
H1 (primary, tail_gap_reliability -> AUC_cell):
  rho = 0.8823529411764706   p = 9.99990e-06   (one-sided perm, 100000, seed 20260523)
  bar rho >= 0.45 AND p <= 0.05 -> PASS
  scipy two-sided cross-check p = 1.27e-06 (perm one-sided is resolution-floored
  at 1/100001; both decisive)
H1b (non-binding improvement guard):
  rho_tail - rho_median = 0.8823529 - 0.0629515 = 0.8194014  >= 0.30 -> PASS
  (auto-satisfied by H1 exactly as the lock noted; records intent, not a constraint)
H2 (coherence, tail_gap_reliability -> frame_reliability):
  rho = 0.7069143446852425   p = 6.8999e-04   -> PASS
  (expected to pass; it does -- no incoherence flagged)
```

The aggregation diagnosis is confirmed with the cleanest possible control: on the
**same 18 cells and the same AUC**, the v0.19 *median* gap reproduces bit-for-bit
(`rho_median_gap_vs_auc = 0.0629514963880289`, abs diff vs v0.19 locked = 0.0), while
swapping median -> q10 tail lifts the bridge to `rho = 0.882`. Aggregation, not
mechanism, was the whole gap. v0.19's H2 miss was an aggregation mismatch, exactly as
the v0.19 synthesis hypothesized.

Report-only sidecars (cannot set the verdict):

```text
leave-one-cell-out (H1 robustness): min/median/max rho = 0.8627 / 0.8787 / 0.9216
  -> H1 is not driven by any single cell (n=18); the bridge survives every drop.
q-sensitivity (H1 rho recomputed at each tail depth):
  q05 -> 0.589   q10 (PRIMARY) -> 0.882   q20 -> 0.360
  The locked q10 is the strongest, vindicating its a-priori rationale: q05 drifts
  toward the min's outlier-noise, q20 drifts toward the median's wash-out. q10 was
  fixed BEFORE computation for the frame_p90-mirror + min-brittleness reasons, not
  selected for being strongest -- but it is honestly the sweet spot of tail depth.
raw cell picture (per_cell_tail_gap_bridge.csv): the three lowest-AUC cells
  (qA4_qB2=0.265, qA5_qB2=0.362, qA4_qB3=0.455) hold both the most fragile spectral
  tail (lowest tail_gap_reliability) AND the most fragile frames (frame_p90 ~0.36-0.40);
  high-AUC cells hold the stiff tail + stiff frames. Spectral tail, frame fragility,
  and AUC co-move across the cells.
```

Independent verification: a standalone `scipy.stats.spearmanr` recompute with independent
grouping/quantile reproduced H1 (0.8823529411764706), H2 (0.7069143446852425), the median
cross-check (0.0629514963880289, diff 0.0 vs v0.19), and all three LOO bounds bit-for-bit.

Bound exactly as registered: this is a **confirmatory re-analysis** on the discovery cells.
It does not upgrade the Tier-2 evidence base, does not promote, does not broaden the
external-transfer claim, and is not an altitude-1 explanation of why vf -> stability. What
it earns: the v0.19 verdict's "partial" can now be read precisely -- the direct spectral-gap
-> AUC bridge *exists and is strong*; v0.19's median simply read the wrong aggregation. The
reliability map is a spectral-gap-tail phenomenon end to end.
